Zaragoza to Teruel

We walked into town firs thing to try and get to all the amazing buildings in time for sunrise.  But we were a little late and slow - and I took a while to wake up for a change - I wonder why!  All along the main road to the old town were covered archways like this to walk under.
Proof that Nikki spends her time photographing the doors of Spain!

Them main walkway with the Cathedral in the distance...

We popped inside the cathredral after having a coffee and some breakfast.  It was beautiful. You weren't allowed to take any photos but I managed to sneak one or two in carefully. A boys choir was singing which was incredibly beautiful.  We were pretty sure that the boys were from a nearby orphanae.

Back out on the square we found this stunning art installation. A lovely spanish lady tried to interpret it for us, but she had no english.  However we got cascadia, and the pool looks like an earthquake fisure, so we think that at some point there was an earthquake and the city rose after this.  Certainly in the cathedral, the floor which is solid marble, was cracked and uneven.

This was the square with all the buildings around it - stunning place...

The remains of an old roman wall at the end of the square speaks volumes of Zaragoza's history.

And Julius Caesar...

We found a market and wandered through it. When a stall owner saw our cameras he put some sunglasses on the pig for us...

Lots of fresh fish - some still moving!

Nikki and Steven bought hats.... Steven was trying to suck in his stomach!

A couple of the many statues around made by a local artist, of which a museum is decicated to. The name escapes me at this point of time...

We found a house with ants all over it...

And wonderful graffiti on some of the walls down this alley.,..

We headed back to the car and then drove to Teruel. The landscape was beautiful along the way - here's a couple of images Nikki took for me...

Arrived in Teruel and the first thing we had lunch... and Sangria!

Main square of Teruel...

We f0ound a really old museum building, and went in - it was free.  I went in because I spied a verandah that might give me rooftop images.  I was right...

Afterwards we went into another cathedral.  Again no photos were allowed.  I managed to sneak in a couple.  The altar was really intricate with lots of gold...

Afterwards we took the tourist train to see what Teruel had to offer. Very little in English here as it's not a town that many tourists from out of Spain come to. We found a few things we wanted to see before the light went and as soon as we were off the train - hightailed to them The first was the mausoleum of lovers. Legend has it that they fell in love, but he had no money, so went off to seek his fortune and asked her to wait for five years. Five years went by and he didn't turn up so she married someone else. Shortly after he returned, and asked her to kiss him as she was dying. She refused, but later she went and kissed him, and as she did, she fell dead as well. So they buried them together.  Their story is an event that is celebrated every year.  This happened in the 14th century.

We were able to see their tomb, but also they are mummified in the tomb and you can look through to see them.

We then hightailed to get the last of the light at a vantage point we saw on the train. We were virtually running so we didn't miss the lovely evening light...

As we walked back the sky was on fire...

This is the gorgeous bridge we had to walk over to get to the vantage point...

Teruel is different again, Moorish architecture, a little bigger than some of the places we stayed at, but smaller than the cities obviously. Friendly people.  It's great.  We leave this morning to our next place...
